The award-winning project integrates Sertus smoke ventilation products into Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service’s state-of-the-art fire training environment. The Academy enables firefighters to train in realistic high-rise scenarios, providing invaluable insight into how smoke control systems behave under live fire conditions.
This collaborative approach helps close the gap between system design, installation, and frontline use – supporting safer buildings through better shared understanding across the supply chain.
The Academy also hosted Sertus Live, our industry learning event series that brought together more than 150 fire safety, M&E, architectural, and building services professionals earlier this year. These live demonstrations and discussions continue to support cross-industry competence and cultural change.
Shane White, Managing Director at Sertus, said:
This award is a direct reflection of what collaboration can achieve. Working alongside Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service has shown the power of aligning firefighting experience with engineering expertise. It’s partnerships like this that drive real progress in building safety.
We were proud to work alongside Wates, the main contractor responsible for delivering the project, and Maclec Ltd, who supported the installation and commissioning of the smoke ventilation systems.
The H&V News Awards took place at a major industry gathering celebrating outstanding work across heating, ventilation, and building services – from decarbonisation to system innovation and customer service excellence.
Ella Mackenzie, Editor of H&V News, said:
The 2025 winners exemplify the innovation and dedication transforming the sector. It’s been inspiring to see the range of impactful work being delivered across the UK.
